Dumpster Sizes: 10, 15, 20 and 30 Yard

Pick once, pick right.

Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards of volume, not weight. A 10 yard holds about 3 pickup truck loads; a 30 yard holds about 10. The right choice depends on how much room your debris takes up and how much it weighs. those are two different problems.

Volume is only half the decision

Two containers of the same size can produce very different invoices. A 20 yard filled with couches, boxes, and closet contents will come in under its weight allowance easily. The same 20 yard filled with shingles from a 25-square roof will be at or over 3 tons before it is two-thirds full.

That is why heavy material. concrete, brick, block, dirt, tile, plaster, and shingles. usually goes in a 10 or 15 yard container even when the volume would fit a larger one. The smaller box is not a downgrade; it is what keeps you from paying overage on a load the truck legally cannot lift.

Sizing by project

ProjectRecommended sizeWhy
Single room cleanout10 yardFurniture and boxes from one room rarely exceed 3 pickup loads.
Bathroom remodel10 yardTile, tub, vanity, and drywall are heavy but low volume.
Garage or basement cleanout15 yardHigh volume, light weight. the classic 15 yard job.
Flooring tear-out (1,500 sq ft)15 yardCarpet, pad, and tack strip compress well; tile pushes toward a 10.
Roof tear-off (up to 25 squares)20 yardVolume fits easily; the weight allowance is the constraint.
Kitchen remodel20 yardCabinets, counters, appliances, flooring, and drywall together.
Whole-house cleanout20–30 yardDepends on how full the house is. When in doubt, go 30.
New construction / addition30 yardFraming scrap and packaging are bulky and light.
Estate or hoarding cleanout30 yardMaximum volume, and often a second container.
Concrete, brick, or dirt10 yardWeight limit is reached long before the box fills.

How much clearance each size needs

Delivery requires more room than the container itself, because the truck has to back in, tilt the bed, and roll the box off. Plan for roughly 60 feet of straight approach, 10.5 feet of width, and 22 feet of overhead clearance clear of limbs, gutters, and service lines.

A lot of properties around Johnson City, Gray, and out toward Elizabethton have steep or narrow drives. Tell us in advance and the driver will plan the approach rather than discovering it on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular dumpster size?

The 20 yard is the most rented size in this market. It handles a roof tear-off, a kitchen or bath remodel, and most whole-house cleanouts, and it still fits on a standard two-car driveway.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof?

A 20 yard for most residential roofs up to about 25 squares of single-layer architectural shingle. Two layers, or a roof larger than 30 squares, usually means a 30 yard or a swap. Shingles are dense, so the weight allowance matters more than the volume.

Can I put a dumpster on my driveway?

Driveway placement is common, but surface risk and protection methods vary by container, truck, and site. Describe asphalt, sealed concrete, pavers, gravel, steep grades, or fresh surfaces so placement and any available board protection can be confirmed before booking.

What if I pick the wrong size?

If you undershoot, we can bring a second container or swap the full one. but you pay for two deliveries. If you overshoot, you paid a little more than you needed and nothing else went wrong. That asymmetry is why we tell people to size up when they are genuinely torn.
